THE FOTO: Saigon, May 1975. Before Dan Cameron Rodill metamorphosed into gringoman, he spent years in Indochina (mostly Vietnam and Cambodia) during the war. He did work and bylined reports for the Saigon Post and, later, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Tribune and Newsday, including sailing up the Mekong in a Filipino freighter to beseiged Phnom Penh (nice bylined story in Chicago Sun-Times, July 15, 1973, with foto, after ship was hit portside by a Khmer Rouge rocket.) Here he is seen covering the fall of Saigon for CBS News after the North Vietnamese Army surrounded and captured Saigon. The CBS staffers had fled in the panic and the rumors of imminent bloodbath.
